The Physics of the Righting Reflex

Most members of the cat family have a special ability to land on their feet when they fall from anywhere. Cats are scientifically known as Felidae, which are very famous species of carnivorous mammals.
The cat species includes Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Jaguars, domestic cats, and many more. All of these, when falling from a height, tend to land on their feet. This is because of the Righting Reflex. This allows them to orient themselves and land on their feet. This sense becomes approximately perfect at 9 to 10 weeks of age.
Anatomy and Mechanics
The cat's body structure also supports this motion. They have flexible spines and shoulders which mold according to their needs. From a young age, they develop the senses to rotate their body in mid-air. While falling, cats spread their legs in the air, which helps to slow their speed, and ultimately land on their legs.
Size Matters
Bigger cats, such as lions, are probably not able to balance themselves most of the time. This is due to their larger size and weight issues.
