MATHEMATICAL FORMULAS

BMI Formula & Calorie Equations —

Understand how BMI and daily calorie calculations work mathematically.

METRIC SYSTEM

Metric BMI Formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ [height (m)]²

Example: For a weight of 70 kg and height of 175 cm (1.75 m):
70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86 BMI

IMPERIAL SYSTEM

Imperial BMI Formula

BMI = [weight (lbs) ÷ height (inches)²] × 703

Example: For a weight of 154 lbs and height of 5'9" (69 inches):
(154 ÷ 4,761) × 703 = 0.0323 × 703 = 22.74 BMI

CALORIE FORMULA

Mifflin-St Jeor BMR Formula

Men: 10×W + 6.25×H - 5×A + 5
Women: 10×W + 6.25×H - 5×A - 161

Where W = weight in kg, H = height in cm, and A = age in years. Multiply BMR by activity factor (1.2 to 1.9) for Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions —

5.5 feet equals 167.64 cm. Since 1 foot has 12 inches, 0.5 feet is 6 inches. Therefore, 5.5 feet represents 5 feet 6 inches. In meters, 5.5 ft is approximately 1.68 meters.

To convert centimeters to feet and inches manually:

  1. Divide your height in centimeters by 2.54 to find total inches.
  2. Divide total inches by 12 to get whole feet.
  3. The remainder represents inches.

For instance, 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.89 inches = 5 feet 8.9 inches (approx 5'9").

The BMI formula is identical for adult men and women: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Although men and women naturally have different body fat distributions, WHO clinical ranges apply across all adults aged 18 and older.

A calorie calculator calculates your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Consuming roughly 500 fewer calories per day creates a 3,500-calorie deficit per week, which typically translates to 1 pound (0.45 kg) of fat loss per week in a safe, sustainable manner.

1 cm is equal to 0.0328084 feet or 0.393701 inches. To convert any cm measurement to decimal feet, multiply the centimeter value by 0.0328084.

BMI calculates mass relative to height, but cannot distinguish between dense muscle mass, body fat, or bone density. Muscular athletes often show an "Overweight" BMI despite very low body fat. Always pair BMI with waist circumference or body composition testing.
