Check your Body Mass Index
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool widely used to categorize a person's weight relative to their height. It provides a useful estimate of whether an individual is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese.
While BMI is a good general indicator, it doesn't measure body fat directly. It doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. Therefore, athletes with high muscle mass might be categorized as overweight despite being fit. Always consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive assessment.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely-used measurement that estimates whether your weight is appropriate for your height. Our free online BMI calculator gives you an instant result — just enter your weight in kilograms and your height in centimetres, and you'll see your BMI value along with your health category. No account or signup is needed.
BMI is used by doctors, nutritionists, and health organisations worldwide as a quick screening tool. While it has limitations (see FAQ below), it remains one of the most accessible ways to understand your approximate weight status and take the first step toward better health.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). A person weighing 70 kg at 1.75 m has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which is in the Normal range.
The WHO defines Normal weight as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is Underweight; 25–29.9 is Overweight; 30 and above is Obese.
BMI doesn't measure body fat directly — it can misclassify very muscular athletes as overweight, and older adults may have a "normal" BMI despite having high body fat. Use it as a starting point, not a definitive diagnosis.
Use the imperial formula: BMI = (weight in lbs × 703) ÷ height² (in inches). Or simply convert: lbs ÷ 2.205 = kg, and inches × 2.54 = cm, then use this calculator.
A BMI over 25 is a signal worth discussing with a doctor — but it is just one of many health indicators. Waist circumference, blood pressure, and cholesterol are equally important.
